Stephen Petterson, PhD, Senior Health Policy Researcher

Stephen Petterson is Senior Health Policy Researcher at the Robert Graham Center. Previously, as a sociologist and social statistician, he was on faculty at the University of Virginia and a researcher at the Southeastern Rural Mental Health Research Center. He has taught courses in statistics, welfare policy, problems of urban life and sociology of work.

His research interests are in national and state health policy, access to care and health insurance, the relationship between primary care and mental health treatment, and global health. He has a particular interest in understanding the barriers faced by disadvantaged populations in the health care system.

He earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1993 and an undergraduate degree in sociology and anthropology from Haverford College in 1984.
