The Robert Graham Center hosts a 4-week visiting scholars program in health policy. This program is supported by a generous grant from the Pisacano Leadership Foundation, the philanthropic foundation of the American Board of Family Medicine. Scholars work directly with staff on original research projects of interest to them, towards a goal of a national publication and dissemination.
The purposes of the Larry A. Green Visiting Scholars Program are:
- Provide young researchers with a research and policy immersion experience in the nation's capitol focused on health policy as seen from a family medicine and primary care perspective;
- Provide the Graham Center with a renewable source of ideas, energy, competencies, and service that enhances the performance of the Graham Center; and,
- Develop the infrastructure for policy-relevant research in primary care and build research capacity for primary care throughout the nation.
Graham Center Scholars receive:
- Free lodging in a nearby corporate apartment
- A small stipend to help defray living expenses
Length of the experience is individually negotiated based on an applicant's availability but is expected to last not less than four weeks.
All work is collaborative and will require additional preparation both before and after the scholar's visit to the Graham Center. While onsite, work responsibilities may include: literature searches, assisting with manuscripts, drafting a position paper on a particular content area, attendance at hearings and committee meetings, data management, analysis of data sets, attendance at routine meetings of the Graham Center, and ad hoc assignments based on current activity of the Graham Center. Each scholar must agree to be identified during the program as a member of the Graham Center staff and afterwards in various reports concerning the Graham Center and the Pisacano Leadership Foundation.
Our goal is that each scholar will develop a tangible product at the end of his or her internship as well as a longitudinal work-in-progress that permits ongoing interaction with the Graham Center. These may include a written product such as a background piece, Graham Center One-Pagers, or a manuscript. The scholars will be recognized as authors of publications to which they made a significant intellectual contribution.
