Tackling Primary Care Workforce Demands in Light Of Health Care Reform
Insurance expansion under health reform (PPACA) will provide access for 30 million additional persons. It is important to know where we stand with our current primary care workforce, and how population growth and aging for the newly insured will affect the need for more primary care providers. Massachusetts’ experience with nearly universal coverage was instructive for what happens when many newly insured have poor access to primary care. Health reform provisions for improving primary care access may not be enough. Additional strategies will be needed to meet the new challenges.
