Robert Phillips, Jr., M.D., M.S.P.H., director of the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Medicine and Primary Care, was elected a member of the Institute of Medicine, during the IOM’s 40th annual meeting.
IOM members work on committees, boards and other activities that study health care systems, health care policy and clinical issues. Their reports have significant influence on health care policy for the nation.
“Election to the Institute of Medicine is a very significant honor,” said Douglas Henley, MD, executive vice president and chief executive officer of the American Academy of Family Physicians. “Dr. Phillips has dedicated his life to patients and to ensuring that our health care policy works for those patients. His work — and the work of his team at the Robert Graham Center — have made a significant difference in the health and health care of all Americans.”
Phillips has served as director of the Robert Graham Center, a research center focused on bringing the family medicine and primary care perspective to health policy, sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians, since 2004. His research centers on geographic information systems, collaborative care processes, and interactions between physicians and health care systems and their effects on the quality of care.
In addition to directing the Robert Graham Center, Phillips serves on the faculties of the Department of Family Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University, Georgetown University and George Washington University. He provides care to patients at the Fairfax Family Practice Center, Fairfax, Va.
Phillips graduated from the University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville, with honors for special distinction. He completed his family medicine residency training at the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he also completed a research fellowship and completed a Masters of Science in Public Health. He has served on the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Education and as president of the National Residency Matching Program. Phillips currently serves as vice-chair of the Council on Graduate Medical Education.
